The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.
He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.
The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
